Review

I seem to have a soft spot for horror comedies, and while this film is certainly more comedy than horror, it’s still a charmingly mediocre film.

The story follows Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser), an American serving in the French Foreign Legion. O’Connell and company accidentally awaken an ancient force at the archaeological site situated in the ancient city of Hamunaptra.

The story and dialogue are both cheesy. The characters are archetypal but entertaining to watch. My favourite characters are definitely Fraser’s heroic Rick and Kevin J. O'Connor’s cowardly Beni. The group of Americans were also hilarious and Rachel Weisz’s Evelyn had great chemistry with Fraser’s Rick. Yes, the CGI is very dated. Yes, the plot is full of holes (so many unnecessary self-sacrifices). I still found the film charming and enjoyable.

Conclusion

A fun adventure film in the vein of Indiana Jones.
