I'm not that bad.
This documentary follows the life of Albert Rosenberg, nicknamed the "Yorkville Swindler", who is a convicted fraudster based out of the upper-scale Yorkville neighborhood in downtown Toronto. Having been in Yorkville countless times, the locale immediately drew my attention. This film features interviews from his victims, both financial and romantic, from his daughter, and even from the man himself.
Rosenberg follows a classic playbook: fabricate wealth and status, gain trust, then take large sums of money without paying it back. What is interesting is that Rosenberg doesn't just specialize in one type of fraud, but in both investment and romance fraud. It's telling that love and greed are probably core desires of everyone and the modern pig butchering scams are derivatives of what Rosenberg has been doing for decades. What also stood out was Rosenberg's dedication to lie and cheat, with a career of fraud spanning decades and featuring frauds big and small. One is inclined to believe that Rosenberg's motives aren't just financial but he probably enjoys fraud.
A Toronto-based fraudster.
