Review

Five criminals are brought in for questioning in relation to a truck hijacking and 6 weeks later, only one of them is left alive. The criminals include Roger “Verbal” Kint (Kevin Spacey), a physically disabled con artist and the sole survivor six weeks later, and Dean Keaton (Gabriel Byrne), a seasoned criminal trying to get back on the right track. The movie largely follows the interrogation of Verbal by Agent Dave Kujan (Chazz Palminteri) as Verbal retells the events of the six weeks following the police questioning.

The story-telling is very interesting in its nonlinearity and narrative style. The story itself is also very original. The acting is very good, especially the five criminals, who each bring something to the table and are each memorable. For instance, Benicio del Toro’s Fred Fenster has a garbled speech pattern while Spacey’s Verbal is mild-spoken and shy. Byrne’s Keaton also made an excellent foil for Spacey’s Verbal.

Conclusion

An original story with interesting characters.
