I am not imagining things.
In this mystery thriller based on the eponymous novel by Ruth Ware, Keira Knightley plays Lo, an investigative journalist invited aboard a luxury superyacht to report on a new charitable foundation founded by a terminally ill billionaire Anne Bullmer (Gitte Witt) and her husband Richard (Guy Pearce).
The premise of the mystery is very interesting and the setting feels like a more Nordic and darker Agatha Christie story. The film definitely feels lengthy and mostly flat, with a very slow and gradual build-up of tension punctured by sporadic thrilling moments. Overall, despite all of the red herrings the film tries to throw at the audience, the plot does become quite predictable. The ending is also riddled with plot holes and feels very rushed. Knightley tries to give a good performance but feels constrained by the script. One of the few aspects I did like about the film is the Nordic setting, such as the elegantly decorated yacht and the sweeping fjords.
A slow mystery in an elegant setting.
