Review

I’ve always been a fan of Channel 5 and their reporting style that is both satirical and informative. I was pleasantly surprised that Andrew Callaghan worked with HBO to make a full-length documentary film about the January 6 Capital Riots in Washington, D.C.

What I like most about Channel 5 is their nuance and lack of political bias; for instance, while being interviewed by CNN, Callaghan calls out CNN for their role in creating an echo chamber that polarizes political discourse. Much in the balanced style of Channel 5, this film explores both sides of the topic and avoids politically charged narratives; for instance, while Callaghan explores the extreme rightwing elements, such as Alex Jones and the Proud Boys, he also explores the extreme leftwing elements, such as Antifa as well as the duplicit roles of mainstream media in pushing for political polarization.

Overall the film really portrayed the extreme echo chambers driven by both mainstream and niche media; the culmination of which is the infamous Q Family where one’s views are no longer based in reality but are based on whatever media one is consuming.

Conclusion

An informative and entertaining exposé on what caused the January 6 Riots.
