I feel the need...
... the need for speed!
Tom Cruise plays Pete Mitchell, callsign Maverick, is a lieutenant in the US Navy who is chosen to attend the Top Gun academy, a prestigious academy for fighter pilots in Miramar. Maverick, along with his partner Goose (Anthony Edwards) compete for the Top Gun trophy, awarded to the top scoring team in the Top Gun academy.
This movie is iconic, with gorgeous shots of the California landscape and so many iconic lines of dialogue. The film is so successful because it’s accessible and has something for everyone, ranging from romance to F-14 Tomcat fighter jet action.
I recently rewatched this and I keep thinking about the infamous Tarantino analysis of the film being an allegory of Maverick struggling with his homosexuality. The analysis just fits so well; maybe it’s confirmation bias or the age of the film but I keep catching references and suggestions of homosexuality throughout the film. I feel that the film is so simple and superficial one can really apply any analysis on it.
The story is brilliantly simple: a hotshot fighter pilot tries to compete amongst other hotshot fighter pilots on who is the best. Tom Cruise gives an amazing performance with Maverick; although his chemistry with his love interest Charlie (Kelly McGillis) is not amazing, he more than makes up for it with his chemistry with Anthony Edward’s Goose. I still think the Maverick/ Goose bromance is one of the best in cinema history.
An iconic film featuring an iconc bromance.
