Good riddance. Always giving to others instead of to yourself. Why did you live like that? What was the point? What a load of crap.
Seok-woo (Gong Yoo) is a workaholic and divorced fund manager who, after missing the recital of his estranged daughter (Kim Su-an), decides to grant his daughter’s wish to spend her birthday with her mother. Seok-woo and his daughter board a KTX train to Busan but things quickly go off the rails as a zombie apocalypse breaks out.
Train to Busan is definitely an Asian classic; even my girlfriend, who doesn’t like horror films at all, has seen it. The film has the hallmarks of a great zombie movie, such as terrifying hordes of infected people and action-packed near misses with the infected. The film also has a deeply human element to the story such as the exploration of mob mentality and a thinly-veiled critique of Korean societal norms. Other than the protagonist, the characters are largely one-dimensional and archetypes. While I do find the overly simplified characters a tad too non-nuanced, the messages the characters reveal are interesting and meaningful.
An iconic Korean film.
