We're supposed to be a unit!
Suck my unit!
This is one of the ballsiest comedy movies that may never be made again due to its political incorrectness. It follows the story of Hollywood actors who are dropped off in the jungles of Southeast Asia to shoot a Vietnam war film. The shoot quickly goes awry and the self-absorbed actors must overcome their individual struggles to survive the dire situation.
This film features an ensemble cast including Ben Stiller as Tugg Speedman, a washed-up action film star, Robert Downey Jr. as Kirk Lazarus, a method actor who does blackface to embrace his role, and Jack Black as Jeff Portnoy, a drug-addicted comedy star trying to break into serious roles. The film was so incredibly self-aware and critical of Hollywood that it doesn’t even feel offensive. Downey Jr. is hilarious as he critiques the clichés of acting but my favourite character is probably Tom Cruise’s portrayal of Les Grossmann, a ruthless movie producer with mirky morals. Jay Baruchel’s Kevin Sandusky and Brandon T. Jackson’s Alpa Chino also serve as excellent foils for the crazier characters.
The film is very gory and features a ton of dark humour ranging from taboo subjects such as drug addiction, to critique of the various aspects of the Hollywood establishment. The screenplay is very well-written and the dialogues are hilarious; even the more mundane slapstick jokes are hits.
A hilariously satirical take on Hollywood.
