You come in here again... In fact, you go anywhere in this city, preying on innocent people, and we will find you and we will eat both of your arms and then both of your legs. And then we will eat your face right off your head. Do you understand?

Review

Tom Hardy plays Eddie Brock, a down on his luck reporter who accidentally bonds with an alien symbiote. Venom reimagines Brock as an antihero instead of the villain portrayed in the original Spider-Man trilogy.

My favourite aspect of his film is by far Hardy’s performance as Brock/Venom; Hardy excels at rough and gruff characters and he nails this character type in Venom. I particularly enjoyed the banter between Brock and the symbiote (also played by Hardy). Michelle Williams, however, feels flat in comparison as the female lead.

The plot is generic but not terrible and the CGI is excellent; the transformation scenes are some of my favourite scenes in the movie. I felt that Sony probably hampered this with the PG-13 rating; I would have expected a Venom movie to be rated R. The film could have taken more risks.

This film wasn’t particularly memorable but it’s entertaining and sets up a darker-toned Marvel franchise.

Conclusion

A reimagining of an iconic supervillain.
