Review

David (Jason Sudeikis), a middle-aged weed dealer, is forced by his boss Brad (Ed Helms) to smuggle a large shipment of drugs from Mexico to the US. David concocts a plan to hire a fake family to avoid suspicion. David’s fake family includes Rose (Jennifer Aniston), a stripper, Casey (Emma Roberts), a teenage runaway, and Kenny (Will Poulter), David’s innocent neighbour.

This is a very lighthearted and fun comedy. The writing is very casual and the film flows very well. The humour is very good and is just immature enough for me to be laugh out loud funny. The characters are likeable (except Brad) and have varying degrees of development. Sudeikis’ David and Aniston’s Rose don’t have crazy chemistry together but they are fun to watch as a couple. Poulter’s Kenny is hilarious while Roberts’ Casey plays a decent supporting role. The supporting cast were pretty solid, in particular I liked Nick Offerman’s Don, Kathryn Hahn’s Edie, and Luis Guzmán’s Mexican cop.

Conclusion

A charming comedy that has pretty good pacing.
