I gotta see about a girl.

Review

Healthy masculinity is rarely portrayed in the world of cinema, but this film is a shining example of one such portrayal. The story follows Will Hunting (Matt Damon) from South Boston who works as a janitor at MIT and spends his free time drinking with his childhood friends Chuckie (Ben Affleck), Billy (Cole Hauser), and Morgan (Casey Affleck). Will is secretly a genius and when his talents are uncovered, he has to quickly decide what he wants to do with his life.

The script is very good and all the performers do their role well. Damon’s emotionally insecure Will and Robin Williams’ warm Sean have great chemistry together. The supporting cast, which includes Stellan Skarsgård’s paternalistic Lambeau, Minnie Driver’s charming Skylar, and Ben Affleck’s Chuckie, are all amazing. In particular, Driver’s Skylar and Affleck’s Chuckie are probably the two best roles from the two performers, respectively. The film has philosophical themes but it's presented in a very nuanced way and without any pretension.

Conclusion

A very warm movie with many great performances.
