Review

Anvil is a co-op multiplayer shooter with roguelite elements. The player assumes the role of a Breaker, someone who enters Vaults to battle enemies and bosses for rewards such as new skills and weapons. The Vaults are randomly generated so the experience of each run is dependent on the RNG.

Gameplay Gameplay

The story is near non-existent as the game doesn’t rely on it. Each run starts with smaller sublevels which lead to a boss fight. The sublevels have smaller objectives such as reviving allies or protecting turrets while the boss levels are just boss fights. There are also many challenge levels, which are usually just regular levels but scaled up in difficulty.

Combat Boss Fight

The gameplay is initially actually pretty fun. The fast paced shooting is pretty engaging and discovering new environments, gameplay styles, and bosses is always exciting. In particular trying all of the different Breakers is pretty interesting; there are a variety of different gameplay styles, ranging from ranged based snipers to up close melee fighters. The downfall of the game is lack of replayability. After playing through some of the campaigns, I noticed that many stages are either repeats or reskinned versions of previous stages, such as bosses being the same but with a different element. After the novelty factor wore off, the game became quite a grind, especially because one has to develop each different Breaker by grinding for upgrades before one can play well with said Breaker. The multiplayer is also mostly dead and if you want to play with others, you'd have to coordinate in the Discord group.

Conclusion

This would've been good as a mobile game but is lacking content to be a full PC game.
