Review

I’ve decided to start reviewing physical games I play in addition to just video games. I believe physical games represent an interesting medium to deliver content and I would be remiss to not document my experiences with them.

The first physical board game I’m reviewing is a classic. The premise of Apples to Apples is to match “Description” cards to “Thing” cards. The players take being judge; the judge picks a “Description” card, which is often an adjective or an adverb, and the other non-judging players have to select a “Thing” card, which is oftentimes a noun or an action, that best fits the “Description” card. The judge then selects the best-fitting “Thing” card and awards the player who played said “Thing” card a point.

The fun of the game involves players selecting “Thing” cards which, combined with the “Description” cards, makes for a silly combination. As with all party games, this game is the most fun when playing with friends on the same wavelength, as much of the game is pretty nuanced and the humour can be very subtle. The game does have a bit of replayability but it does get old fast and the game also targets a more family-friendly demographic.

Conclusion

A quick game to play with the whole family.
