Review

In this vehicle-building sandbox game, the player assumes the role of a conquering engineer tasked with destroying various realms. The goal is to build different contraptions to progress through the different levels, which range from ruining monuments to destroying all enemies.

Level Destroying a village

I really enjoyed the fantasy medieval style of the game; the graphics are polished and the effects, such as explosions, are very satisfying. The construction of the siege vehicles is extremely in depth. On top of more expected components such as cannons, there are also components for constructing complex contraptions such as logic gates. One can build different siege engines that perform specific tasks, such as having an arm to grab things or propellers to fly around. While I’m pretty mediocre at building these machines, I do enjoy looking at the creative machines others have uploaded to the Workshop.

The main campaign is pretty well-designed, with a variety of different levels. I played through the game both on Xbox Series X and on PC; if you are deciding between console and PC, I’d highly recommend PC. The game is easier to control with mouse and keyboard (especially the vehicle building) and the PC version has game modes which aren’t available on consoles, such as multiplayer servers where people can play together. The caveat is that the game on PC (at least the Windows Store version) isn’t as polished as it is on console; there are various bugs, such as progress not tracking properly. The multiplayer servers were also extremely unstable. I’d recommend the Steam version because it appears to have less bugs.

The game is not without its flaws though; as with all sandbox games, the game can get incredibly frustrating at parts, especially given the variability of the levels. The actual controls for piloting the different creations can also be annoying, which is exasperated by the poor camera controls. Despite this, once one gets used to the unintuitive controls, the game becomes much more enjoyable.

Conclusion

An interesting premise but a bit unpolished.
