Review

This is a third-person hack 'n' slash based on the first canticle of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. The story is a comic book interpretation of the original Inferno; Dante is a Templar knight from the Third Crusade who literally fights Death to escape his sins. His wife, Beatrice, gets kidnapped by Lucifer and Dante travels through Nine Circles of Hell to rescue her.

Story

The gameplay is very engaging and for a hack 'n' slash, pleasantly non-repetitive. There are slight variations in play styles depending on the player choices on whether to absolve or punish the souls of sinners, and there are also platforming and puzzle elements spread throughout the levels. The enemies are also diverse, from pagans to unbaptized babies, the variety of mobs are plenty. The boss fights are some of the highlights of the game; they feel God of War-esque with over the top action sequences and crazy character design.

This art style is insane; with climbable platforms made of tormented souls and grotesque depictions of the various characters in Dante's original poem, the game creatively recreates the macabre atmosphere of Hell. The story also takes many twists and turns, and while it deviates substantially from Dante's original poem, fans of the original Inferno will still appreciate the references to the poem in the game.

Gates of Hell

This mode is just wave after wave of enemies, increasing in difficulty after each wave. There's also a time limit, adding an extra element to consider.

Conclusion

A gruesome game based on Dante's poetry.
