Durak translates to “fool” in Russian. The purpose of the game is to get rid of all the cards once there are no more cards in the deck and the player with cards at the end is the fool. Players “attack” the player to their left by challenging them with a card and the defending player must beat that card, by either playing a higher card of the same suit or by playing a card from the trump suit. The game makes it more exciting by allowing other players to also attack the defender after the initial attack. If the defender wins the attack, they get to attack next. If they lose, they have to pick up all the cards and miss a turn.

There are many variants of the game and every friend group has their own specific rules. There are also many digital versions of the game; I've tried a couple and to be fair they're all rather similar. Personally, I enjoy the game the most in person, where people can openly attack and chirp one another. The game does have quite a bit of strategy but much of it is also luck. My favourite aspect of the game is how fast one’s situation can change. The swings are massive and one turn can make or break one’s chances of winning the game.

Conclusion

Fun party game focused on screwing over your opponents.
