Review

This was one of the first RPGs I’ve played growing up. In the fantasy world of Albion, you play as a young boy whose village is destroyed by bandits. The player then enters the legendary Heroes’ Guild where the boy develops into a hero.

Heroes' Guild Heroes' Guild

This game has so many things going for it. The character designs are cartoonishly awesome and the story, with many fantasy tropes, is very engaging. The combat is decent and there’s a morality alignment system, while favouring good deeds, changes the state of the world and the player based on their moral decisions (which there are many of throughout the game). The soundtrack by Danny Elfman is also legendary and I still sometimes listen to it while I work. My favourite aspect of the game, however, is the sense of humour and fun injected into the world of Albion, which can be sometimes macabre but is always entertaining.

The Lost Chapters

The original Fable was released on Xbox, but there have been subsequent releases on PC, Mac, and Xbox, which includes additional content, including an extension of the main story. To be honest, the new expansion is substantial but not very impactful, but if one is planning to play Fable, The Lost Chapters is the way to go.

Conclusion

A goofy RPG with very interesting mechanics.
