Review

This game is a mobile spin-off of the Gears of War franchise (some of my favourite third-person shooter games). When it first came out, I didn't bother getting it due to reviews of the incredible grind (literally requiring hundreds of hours to progress) and the blatant money-grab lootcrate system. Now that the game is being shut down, I thought I might as well give it a try.

The core gameplay is actually pretty fun; it's a real-time strategy game where you play pins to either defend or capture enemy points. The gameplay is pretty fast-paced and one can experiment around with different strategies and different pin combinations. There is a certain RNG element (the order in which the pins appear) but it's mostly a game of skill. The main gamemode is to play against other players (Versus mode), but there is also Horde mode, where two players work together to fight off waves of enemy pins.

The progress is very slow, or rather it used to be really slow. The developers have decided to fast-track progress for the last two weeks of the game's life; it is clear that people were not meant to progress far in this game, as there is a major bug where once a player reaches level 20 (max level) the game freezes whenever the player tries to upgrade a pin.

The matchmaking is also not the best, finding a good Versus match can be slow and for some reason players can't matchmake for Horde mode; one has to join an active Clan to play Horde.

Conclusion

A decent game but quickly gets grindy and repetitive.
