Review

In the fictional country of Petria, due to the oppressive government headed by the authoritarian President Tyrak, teenagers are trying to cross into the neighbouring country through a highway known as Road 96. The player controls various teens as they travel across Petria towards Route 96 and freedom.

The narrative is from each teen’s first-person perspective. The player controls one teen at a time as said teen adventures across Petria. The teens make their way across various episodes on their journey, each episode being a new location filled with characters and story. The player slowly uncovers the different lore behind the characters they encounter, as well as about Petria as a whole by encountering new episodes.

The core gameplay consists of speaking with the characters the teens come across, as well as various mini games at different locations. The decisions the teen makes have consequences both for the current teen as well as future teens that the player controls.

The main story is clichéd but the narrative technique is very interesting. The game uses an RNG system for determining when each episode appears, so each playthrough will be different than the previous. This also means that many of the episodes have to overlap and the player will hear the same stories over and over again. The voice acting is pretty solid. Some standouts include John (Mark Kaczmarek) and Jarod (Mikee W. Goodman). Some of the script, such as the dialogues of Alex (Angela LeBlanc) is pretty corny, though. The music features plenty of different genres, so there's something for everyone.

Conclusion

It's certainly a unique game that has a lot of heart. The narrative and themes can be a tad heavy-handed but the game kept me interested enough to be invested in the stories.
