Review

Similar to card games like Machiavelli and Vatikan, Rummikub was developed in the 1940s in Romania after the Communist government outlawed card-playing. The goal of Rummikub is for players to get rid of all their tiles and the way to do so is to create runs (series of three or more consecutive tiles of the same colour) and groups (series of three or more same tiles of different colours).

The rules are very simple to pick up but the game is difficult to master. The best parts of the game are when there are many tiles on the board and each player has to recombine the runs and groups to continue getting rid of their tiles. There are variations of rules to abide by and various different strategies which can be used. I found that accumulating tiles is actually a decent strategy at the beginning of each match for more optionality. I also found that not playing all the possible moves at once can be beneficial to avoiding penalties for not being able to make a move. Overall, this game has some interesting probability and statistics built in.

Conclusion

Fun game for math nerds.
