Review

In this sci-fi adventure, you play as an everyday man who gets caught up in an alien invasion. The man receives supernatural powers that help him progress through the world, save his family, and confront the extraterrestrial forces.

Gameplay The protagonist with his family

Despite the premise of the game, the actual gameplay relies much less on exciting action sequences than on walking through the post-invasion wasteland. This game is the first release of a new studio created by Dino Patti, one of the cofounders of Playdead (which released titles such as Limbo). I definitely see the similarities between the two games; Somerville also has no dialogue and instead focuses on the environment to tell the story. Unlike Limbo, however, Somerville has very light action and puzzle elements. It feels much more like a walking sim than a puzzle-platformer. There are some exciting bits but much of the game is relatively mundane. There were also some bugs which caused me to have to replay parts of the game.

Gameplay Light puzzle elements

Conclusion

An atmospheric sci-fi adventure.
