Review

Splitgate is another live service FPS going offline soon. Unlike its peers, Splitgate is not going offline due to the lack of players, but because a sequel is being released. The core gameplay really reminds of me of old-school Halo, with a focus on fast-paced engagements and map knowledge (especially for weapon spawns). The unique feature, of course, is the portal mechanic, where players can place two portals in certain areas of the map and teleport through the portals.

The arena shooter's gameplay is very skill-based and players can get very sweaty with the portals. The time-to-kill is a bit less than Halo but is enough where there's usually a proper engagement between players. I'm not the biggest fan of the character and weapon cosmetics (they all feel a tad dated and unoriginal) but the gameplay kept me engaged. I especially enjoyed some of the wackier gamemodes, such as Big Head Snipers, which reminded me of an exaggerated version of SWAT from Halo, where racking up headshots is the goal.

Edit on 25 August, 2025: Props to the developers for letting fans run the game peer-to-peer after server shutoffs.

Conclusion

A fresh take on the genre.
