Review

The game places the player in the role of Jill, a bartender in a dystopian downtown of a cyberpunk city. The player serves drinks to the patrons while listening to their stories. Different dialogues happen depending on what Jill serves to her customers.

Gameplay Serving drinks

Both the game’s aesthetic and music are very retro and reminded me of anime from the 80s and 90s. The gameplay is also very interesting and makes the visual novel more engaging with the interactivity. The stories of the various characters are definitely out there and the characters themselves have very interesting backstories, ranging from being an assassin to being an android sex worker.

Gameplay Streaming-chan, one of the colourful characters in the game

There are definitely many mature themes and it’s interesting to learn more about the universe that VA-11 Hall-A is in, such as the near anarcho-capitalist nature of society and the different societal norms, such as the widespread acceptance of LGBTQ+ relationships. The game feels like an inside joke with a great sense of humour, especially pertaining to dogs. The dialogue is also very well-written and often muses about philosophy. Outside of serving drinks, the player also gets to interact with various aspects of the world, such as reading fictitious news and setting the playlist for the bar. The player also hangs out in Jill’s room. The game is very polished except for the fact that it always starts windowed despite what the settings are.

Conclusion

A game with a silly premise that has some deep moments.
