Sport is full of corrupt people.

Review

In this sports documentary series, six different sporting scandals from a variety of sports are explored and exposed. The scandals involve some very large names in the sporting world, ranging from Italian football giant Juventus F.C., to South African cricket legend Hansie Cronje. The documentaries explore the incentives behind each scandal and how the scandals were carried out.

Some of the scandals, such as the 1994 Arizona State point fixing scandal and the 2002 Olympic figure skating scandal, I’ve heard of in passing, but most of the scandals I’ve never even heard about. The documentaries are presented as journalistic pieces and contain many firsthand accounts from the people involved. Some of the larger stories, such as Tommy Burns killing show jumping horses for insurance money, aren’t fully explored and are missing some crucial details, such as the investigation into Helen Brach’s disappearance, which was related to the horse killings. Most of the stories, though, are well researched.

As with FIFA, much of the motives stem from money and power. Some of the stories were very unfortunate though, such as Stevin “Hedake” Smith throwing away his basketball future for a tiny sum of money (compared to what his accomplices were making), and Randy Lanier trafficking marijuana to help fund his promising racing career.

Conclusion

Entertaining look at a variety of sports and their scandals.
