I didn't want to make this documentary for me.

Review

In this four-part docuseries covering the illustrious career of football’s golden child, the story of David Beckham is explored from his childhood playing youth football, to him joining his dream team Manchester United, to his eventual fallout with Man U and ensuing stints with various other clubs including Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, and AC Milan.

Beckham is perhaps one of England’s most accomplished footballers and his career is filled with dramatic ups and downs, from his treble crown with Man U to his troubled relationship with Alex Fergusson. The series explores each event through thorough interviews with both Beckham as well as his teammates. It’s surprising just how legendary of an era that Beckham played in; the series featured interviews with football legends such as Fergusson, Ronaldo, and Figo. The series definitely shows Beckham in a positive light by portraying unquestionably Beckham’s own narrative and doesn’t dive into any of his personal controversies. Despite this, it’s interesting to hear Beckham’s take on some of his toughest moments in his career, such as him drawing the ire of an entire country after being sent off with a red card during England’s run in the 1998 World Cup. The docuseries also stops right after David’s retirement as a player, I would’ve liked to learn more about his current involvement in football as a team owner.

One thing that stuck out is just how important one’s partner is for one’s career, especially if one is in a highly competitive field where one may have to make many personal sacrifices to succeed. David Beckham definitely succeeded in spite of Victoria Beckham and not because of her. Some of her behaviour were definitely not great for his career, such as telling David he’ll be a father the night right before his World Cup match and threatening David to be present during the birth of their child right before arguably David’s most important match of his career (Man U’s run for the treble). I found the candidness of Victoria and David speaking about their marriage dynamics very refreshing but it became clear that the two had very different expectations and goals for their relationship. I believe having an understanding and tolerant partner is a critical element for success. The series also demonstrated the importance of speaking multiple languages in football, as Carlos Queiroz got many top coaching roles by being fluent in multiple languages.

Conclusion

A review of David Beckham's legendary football career.
