You know what it takes to find a truffle? A hog, a dog, whatever keenly scented, carefully trained animal gets the assignment, spends a lifetime traipsing through the dark, sniffing out the slightest aroma. And only then the digging begins. And what do you think they’re digging through? Shit. That’s the thing we don’t say much about, right? The things we most value, the things we pay most dearly to ingest are grown in shit.

Review

This season sees the continuation of the cat-and-mouse game between Axe (Damian Lewis) and Chuck (Paul Giamatti). Both continue to toe the lines of legality and morals while trying to outmaneuver the other. I do like how, while the season focuses on Axe versus Chuck, there’s also portrayals of their individual jobs, such as Axe facing off against other hedge fund managers and Chuck playing the game of politics.

There were new characters introduced this season, of which I really liked Taylor (Asia Kate Dillon), Axe’s new protégé. One area which I didn’t like was the focus of the season on Axe and Chuck’s respective personal lives. The conflicts in their personal life felt insignificant compared to their professional struggles and I found the show spent too much time focused on their familial conflicts and made some scenes seem straight out of a soap opera. Furthermore, I felt the fixation of the show on the character of Wendy Rhoades (Maggie Siff) distracted away from the main professional conflict between Axe and Chuck.

Conclusion

A bit too much family drama but still a solid show.
