Life can be dangerous when you're a dark tourist.
Kiwi journalist David Farrier explores the phenomenon of dark tourism, where people travel to places linked with death and tragedy. Farrier visits many of the popular dark tourism locations, which range from the relatively benign, such as going on guided serial killer tours, to the extreme, such as swimming in a radioactive lake and trying to sneak into Famagusta in Cyprus.
At first I couldn’t help but notice the elephant in the room, both physically and in terms of mannerism, Farrier resembles Louis Theroux. I don’t believe Farrier goes out of his way to mimic Theroux and resembling Theroux is not entirely a bad thing. The presentation style is frank with a tinge of sarcasm. The overall effect is cheeky and comical.
This show doesn’t really have a plot and each episode feels like grouped mini-episodes. There was some reflection on the ethics of dark tourism but overall the show was mainly focused on Farrier’s experiences at the dark tourist attractions.
A superficial but entertaining travel show.
