Review

James May, from auto/engineering shows such as Top Gear and The Grand Tour, is one of my favourite British TV presenters. His shows are equally funny and informative, and this show is no different.

May travels throughout Japan and partakes in Japanese culture and activities, ranging from the traditional, such as being entertained by a geisha and trying kyūdō (Zen archery), to the modern, such as drinking with salarymen and riding a motorcycle with a biker gang.

I enjoyed how down-to-earth May is as a presenter; while he sometimes sprinkles highbrow references, in most of the scenes he’s the clueless gaijin who is willing to learn. The highlights of the show is May sumimasen-ing his way through the unique Japanese culture and interacting both with the locals and his guides. His banter with the film crew also adds an extra dimension of entertainment to the show.

Conclusion

A hilarious Japanese travel show.
