Review

The docuseries return to East Mississippi Community College as the football team tries to recover from the dramatic ending of the last football season. There are many familiar faces, such as the majority of the coaching and support staff, but most of the players are fresh faces. The players come to play for EMCC in the hopes of making the roster in a D1 college program and eventually starting a career in the NFL. Most of the players are former D1 athletes but have been kicked out of their respective programs for various reasons, such as poor academics or legal troubles.

The show focuses much more on the star players, such as diving into their family backgrounds and how they ended up in EMCC. Some players, such as Isaiah Wright, have very compelling backstories. The show also briefly follows up with the stars from the previous season, which I found interesting. This season starts to scrutinize the head coach Buddy Stephens, in particular his frequent emotional outbursts and his attempts to correct his character. There is definitely some tension between the filming staff and Stephens, and Stephens begins to receive the reality TV villain treatment as the season goes on. One particular theme is Stephens’ view on player injuries, such as pressuring players to keep playing, despite potential serious injuries. Overall the docuseries shows a more nuanced side of JUCO football, although there are still some sensational moments.

Conclusion

Another indepth look at JUCO football.
