Review

Idris Elba returns as DCI Luther as he grapples with the consequences of the first series' events. Luther dives deeper into the underbelly of London's underworld while trying to prevent serial killers.

With only four episodes, series 2 is even more compact than series 1. There are two cases, each spanning two episodes, but there are plot-lines that continue throughout the series, such as Luther trying to save the daughter of an acquaintance (Aimee-Ffion Edwards) from a ruthless criminal organization. Series 2 is noticeably gloomier and melodramatic compared to series 1. Elba expertly carries Luther's scar from series 1, especially how tired and depleted Luther's character is. I also like how the side-characters receive development as well, such as Paul McGann's Mark North and Dermot Crowley's Martin Schenk.

Conclusion

A strong followup.
