Review

Mallory Beach, a resident of the Lowcountry region of South Carolina, is killed when the boat she and her friend on struck a bridge. The driver of the boat, Paul Murdaugh, belongs to the powerful Murdaugh clan of lawyers who hold great influence within the tight knit community of Hampton, South Carolina. The documentary explores the scandal that ensued as well as the other shocking controversies surrounding the Murdaughs.

The story starts with an exploration of a tragic accident but things quickly get unhinged as the series explores the other alleged crimes of the family, which includes everything from embezzlement to murder. I like how, despite the sensationalist subject matter, the film doesn’t overly sensationalize many of the events. Instead, the series relies on first-person accounts from the people linked to the family and the incidents, such as Paul and Mallory's friends. Overall, the series paints a grim picture of how one affluent family can have such a large influence on a small community.

Conclusion

A docuseries about how the downfall of a powerful Southern family.
