See, people love that cozy feeling Supes give them... but if you knew half the shit they get up to... Fuckin' diabolical. But then, that's where I come in. To spank the bastards when they get out of line.

Review

Adapted from the comic books, this show takes place in an alternate Earth where superheroes (Supes) exist and are under the employment of Vought International, a for-profit corporation. Underneath the facade of Vought's good marketing, the heroes are often depraved and egotistical. The story of The Boys surrounds a group of human vigilantes who are out to keep the "superheroes" accountable, in particular the seven most powerful superheroes, creatively named the Seven.

This show is a parody of the typical superhero story and it puts an unorthodox twist on the classic revenge story. The show is brutal and violent, but filled with dark humour. This is exactly how I envision a comic book would look on the screen, with corny and witty dialogue and interesting characters, each with their own attitudes and quirks. What I really enjoyed about this show is the amount of detail put into world-building, from subtle details like background advertisement posters to certain plot points parodying the real world; the show depicts a dystopian world which feels somehow realistic and relatable to our real life. Certain topics like celebrity worship, fake news, and the misogynistic portrayal of women in popular media are very real in our real world too.

Conclusion

A unique show about superheroes which is somehow relatable to our real world.
