You know, sometimes, Winston, you gotta make choices you don’t want to protect the people you care about. Maybe you’ll get to understand that one day.

Review

Taking place in the grimy New York of the 1970s, the John Wick spinoff follows a young Winston Scott (Colin Woodell) as he vies for control of the New York Continental hotel.

The film follows many subplots, culminating in an explosive showdown between Winston and the ruthless crime lord Cormac O’Connor (Mel Gibson). There are many familiar faces from the main film series, such as a young Charon (Ayomide Adegun), and new characters being introduced, such as Winston’s brother Frankie (Ben Robson) and Frankie’s lover Yen (Nhung Kate). Out of the subplots, some were interesting but cut short, such as the struggles of Lou (Jessica Allain) against the Chinese crime lord (Dan Li). Other subplots were pointless, such as the entire story of KD (Mishel Prada). Overall the show captures the noir aesthetic and brutal violence of the mainline John Wick series. The character designs are awesome, such as that of Hansel (Mark Musashi) and Gretel (Marina Mazepa), but the plot is a bit unfocused and they should have cut some of the subplots to focus on the main story. The action is good and the performances are decent all around.

Conclusion

An interesting series which further explores the world of John Wick.
