The Punisher (2004) has always been one of my favourite anti-heroes. This show is another retelling of Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) and his mission to punish those who wronged him. Frank is a Marine veteran whose family was brutally murdered; Frank attempts to uncover a complex conspiracy while hunting down those responsible for the murder of his family.
Bernthal nails the role of Frank and has great emotional depth. He was exciting to watch throughout the entire season. All the scenes, from Frank’s rage to Frank’s despair, are very visceral. The supporting cast, such as Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Micro and Ben Barnes’ Billy Russo make great canvases for Bernthal’s Frank. Some side stories, such as those about the investigations of Homeland Security led by Amber Rose Revah’s Dinah Madani are a bit slow and drag down the story's pace. My favourite aspect of the show other than Bernthal’s Frank are the amazing action scenes. The sequences are well-choreographed and the use of violence and brutality is very impactful.
Great show that captured the essence of the Punisher.
