Spartans. Ready your breakfast. And eat hearty… For tonight we dine in Hell!

Review

This comic is based on the Battle of Thermopylae where the Spartan king Leonidas fell defending Greece from the Persians.

Miller is one of my favourite comic book authors and this story is one of his most iconic works. The story is epic and filled with badass laconic one-liners (the term laconic actually originates from Laconia, the region of Greece where the Spartans were). Miller shows the militant Spartan society and demonstrates the Spartan’s resolve, even against impossible odds. The story is historical fiction and, with its crazy character designs and settings, does not even attempt to be historically accurate. Miller does an excellent job with illustration, depicting brutal scenes of violence and war. Varley does a decent job colouring, especially with the shadows.

Conclusion

An epic comic book depicting an epic moment in history.
