Review

It is a horror epic, portraying heroic adventures in a (very) long format against evil. Unlike traditional epics of old, however, this epic is filled with very human characters with personal flaws and weaknesses. King does what he does best, building a dark and twisted environment (in Maine, of course) where very relatable and human characters must struggle to survive and fight against evil.

The saga is long and winding, and is split into two parts. The story first follows a group of misfit children, the Losers Club, who try to solve the mystery surrounding the murders of children in Derry, a fictional town in Maine. The second part is the same protagonists returning to Derry to face the evil once more, as adults.

While seemingly superficial, the story has some classic King themes, such as childhood trauma, willful ignorance from authorities, and overcoming evil through bravery, hardship, and sacrifices. Yes, this novel is extremely long. Yes, there are definitely some questionable situations. Yes, this is definitely one of King’s finest works.

Conclusion

One of King's seminal works.
