Review

I had not realized that Kingsman: The Secret Service was actually based on a 6-issue comic collection. I decided to check out said comics.

The film shares the same story as the comics; it follows the story of Gary “Eggsy” Unwin who transforms from a chav to a spy for the British Secret Service. Eggsy has to protect the world from a global threat.

I expected the comics to be good because Mark Millar was the writer of Kick-Ass while Dave Gibbons was the illustrator for Watchmen. The comics contain the same humour as the film and they contain many of the same scenes. There are some minor differences, especially in the characters, but overall the film was relatively faithful to the source material.

I felt the film edged out the comic; while the comic wasn’t particularly bad, per se, the film was just better in most respects. The film had more nuance, such as the relationship between Eggsy and his old friends from his neighbourhood. The film also had better dialogue and better action sequences. The comic had decent art though and also contained some scenes which weren't featured in the film.

Conclusion

A decent comic about spies.
