Review

This film starts off after the events of the first film, Evelyn (Emily Blunt), Regan (Millicent Simmonds), and Marcus (Noah Jupe) leave their home in search of other survivors. They run into an old family friend Emmett (Cillian Murphy).

The situation feels less hopeless now that the characters have devised a way to kill the aliens and at the same time, the film also feels less intellectual, as there are many more thrilling scenes. The characters are still very solid, I like how the film continues developing the returning characters from the first film. Blunt’s Evelyn becomes more badass while Simmonds’ Regan becomes more rebellious (and reckless). Murphy’s Emmett partially fills Krasinski’s old role while bringing a new cynical paradigm to the survivor group. Overall the story is rather predictable, and as with the first film, is riddled with plot holes.

Conclusion

A decent follow-up.
