Review

The titular character, Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), finally gets her standalone film. In the movie, Romanoff confronts an organization from her past and new characters, such as Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) and Alexei (David Harbour) are introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Johansson does her best work yet in the MCU; when she’s finally given screentime Johansson is able to develop Romanoff’s character by portraying the conflict and regret within her. Pugh’s Belova, however, was my favourite character in the film and her chemistry and banter with Johansson’s Romanov are some of my favourite parts of the film. Harbour’s Alexei and Rachel Weisz’s Melina were also excellent supporting characters and added much flavour (and humour) to the film.

The action sequences, like most Marvel movies, are excellent. The use of CGI is a bit corny, especially near the end, but it’s not terrible. The plot deviates greatly from the comic source material, and some characters, like one of the main antagonists, I felt was wasted in this film.

Conclusion

A surprisingly decent spy film with a disappointing ending.
