Review

The sequel of the wildly popular How to Train Your Dragon follows Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless (Randy Thom) five years after the events of the first film. A new threat emerges in Drago Bludvist (Djimon Hounsou), a ruthless warlord and dragon hunter who seeks to take over the world with an enslaved dragon army.

The story isn’t as good as that of the first film but there are many similar themes in both films, such as the conflicting desires of Hiccup and his father Stoick (Gerard Butler). I really liked how the film shows the changes in Berk after the first film. I also like how the film opts to change the narrative instead of repeating the same formula. Unfortunately, the overall story of the second film feels a bit less focused but the story is still filled with adventure and many fun moments. The film definitely feels more mature than the first film, which is fitting as the characters are older. Baruchel’s Hiccup and Butler’s Stoick are still amazing. The new cast which includes Cate Blanchett and Kit Harington are solid as well. The animation is still incredible.

Conclusion

A less focused but still solid film.
