Review

This is the followup film to Raiders of the Lost Ark. This film follows Indy (Harrison Ford) as he adventures in India. Indy and his companions must retrieve a mystical rock stolen by an evil cult.

This film is much darker than its predecessor, both in the cinematography and its story. The story is also much more full-on fantasy fiction rather than the first film; this film also felt much more like a thriller than the first. The first film’s setting felt exotic and this film tried to replicate it with India; this hasn’t aged as well since India is much more developed and much less exotic today compared to when the film was first released. Much like the setting, the film made use of some primitive special effects which have also not aged well. Despite this, the rest of the film, especially the action sequences (minus the ones with CGI) aged very well.

This film was meant as a prequel to the first film, so a new supporting cast is introduced. I liked Ke Huy Quan’s quirky Short Round but I found Kate Capshaw’s Willie Scott to be a tad annoying and a clear downgrade from Allen’s Marion.

Conclusion

Not as good as the first film but still entertaining.
