I'm Julia Child. Bon appetit!

Review

In this comedic biographical film, two parallel stories are happening: that of the legendary cookbook author Julia Child (Merly Streep) and that of the blogger Julie Powell (Amy Adams). The story of Julia Child follows her moving to France, learning to cook at the Le Cordon Bleu, and eventually authoring a French cookbook for Americans. The story of Julie Powell follows her attempting to make every single recipe from Childs’ cookbook and the ensuing success of Julie’s blog.

Without a doubt, Streep’s gregarious and charismatic Julia Childs with her signature falsetto voice and large height is the best part of this film. I particularly liked the chemistry between Streep’s Julia and Stanley Tucci’s Paul Child (reminiscent of The Devil Wears Prada), as well as between Julia and her friends, such as Linda Emond’s Simone Beck. I also enjoyed how Streep portrays Child’s love for food.

While Adams’ Julie Powell is fun to watch, the story of Julie Powell lacks the lore and significance of that of Julia Childs. I get that the film is based on a book, but they should’ve just done a film on Julia Child and not on Julie Powell; the Powell scenes feel like commercial breaks in a Julia Child film.

Conclusion

A fun biographical drama where Streep steals the show.
