Forget love and forget hate. Except for vengeance, these must be forgotten. And thus, there should be no sadness in you.
This film adaptation of the manga serves as the inspiration for Tarantino's Kill Bill films. The story follows Yuki (Meiko Kaji), a young woman who is brought up with only revenge in mind. She hunts down those who tormented her mother.
As with the manga (and with many Japanese films of this era), the aesthetics of the film is very striking, and almost poetic in its violence and (liberal) use of blood. The story is pulpy but Kaji does an excellent job portraying the stoic and controlled Yuki. I like how Kaji portrays Yuki almost as a tragic heroine who is doomed to a bleak fate which she can't change. While the film is mostly known in the West as Tarantino's inspiration for Kill Bill, it is really compelling on its own.
A pulpy Japanese revenge story.
