Previous Mamma Mia! review:
The sequel of the hit jukebox musical takes place a year after the passing of Donna (Meryl Streep). Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is preparing for the grand opening of her family’s hotel in Greece with Sam (Pierce Brosnan) and Señor Cienfuegos (Andy Garcia) but two of her dads, Harry (Colin Firth) and Bill (Stellan Skarsgård), as well as her husband Sky (Dominic Cooper) are busy and will not be able to attend the opening party. Intertwined with Sophie’s story is the story of a young Donna (Lily James) exploring the world and arriving at the Greek island.
If you enjoyed the first Mamma Mia! film then you will also enjoy the sequel. Much of the cast from the first film are carried over. The film does suffer with the absence of Streep but James’ charismatic young Donna picks up the slack. The supporting cast for the story of young Donna, such as her sidekicks Rosie (Alexa Davies) and Tanya (Jessica Keenan Wynn), as well as the young Harry (Hugh Skinner), Bill (Josh Dylan), and Sam (Jeremy Irvine), were fantastic as well. The story is as corny as the first film and it was interesting to see Donna’s backstory. There were definitely some incredulous plot points to include music, such as Cher’s Fernando. The music of ABBA is amazing as always.
Another cheesy summer musical with a great soundtrack.
