Review

Uprising picks up 10 years after the original [Pacific Rim](https://andyzhang.me/blog/film-review-pacific-rim.html0 and follows Jake Pentecost (John Boyega), the son of Marshal Pentecost. Although the war with Kaijus has ended, a new threat arises and Jaegers are called back into action once more.

While the story of the first film is by no means deep or thought-provoking, the story of the second film feels flat compared to that of the first. The storylines feel scattered and the film lacks the focus of the first; this film feels almost like a teen drama. For instance, the many scenes with Liwen Shao (Jing Tian) feel like a ploy to cater to Chinese audiences as she adds very little to the film. John Boyega’s Jake also feels like a downgrade from Idris Elba’s Marshal Pentecost while Scott Eastwood’s Nate Lambert feels like a downgrade from Charlie Hunnam’s Raleigh Becket. The action sequences are still solid but they feel soulless compared to the sequences of the first film.

Conclusion

While the story isn't the focus of these films, having a bad story can ruin the enjoyment.
