Review

The third movie is very interesting because Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) is no longer the underdog but the reigning heavyweight champion. Balboa fights numerous subpar opponents to defend his title but Clubber Lang (Mr. T), a vicious contender, dethrones Rocky after Rocky finally accepts Clubber’s challenge.

I do like how the film explores an underexplored aspect of sports drama, namely the drive and desire required to maintain one’s success after one is already successful. In the film Rocky becomes complacent and as a result loses his title. The journey for Rocky to rediscover his passion and hunger was pretty interesting to watch. Stallone is excellent as Rocky while Mr. T plays a one-dimensional, but still entertaining Clubber. The supporting cast which includes Burgess Meredith’s Mickey, Talia Shire’s Adrian, and Carl Weathers’ Apollo Creed all play their roles in influencing Rocky’s journey.

The film is very predictable and felt like a soap opera at times with the overly corny and dramatic scenes. The film does have its charms, though, such as Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” which remains to this day one of the best movie theme songs ever.

Conclusion

A bit slow but I like the new perspective at being a champion.
