Review

This film covers one of my favourite characters' origin story; it covers Han Solo's background, from his meeting with Chewie, to how he encountered the Millennium Falcon, to the (finally) infamous Kessel Run. The casting is excellent, especially the peripheral characters, such as Woody Harrelson as Tobias Beckett (a character inpired by Long John Silver from Treasure Island), Emilia Clarke as Qi'ra (Solo's love interest), and Donald Glover as a young Lando. I especially liked Alden Ehrenreich's portrayal of Solo's slow change from an idealist into the cynic rogue from the original trilogy.

I felt this film is returning to the roots of the original Star Wars trilogy, in portraying a straightforward Western adventure story, but doing so with the characteristic Star Wars magic (corny dialogue and amazing visual effects). There were also many subtle references to the original trilogy, such as Chewie being bad at space chess and Lando's fondness for capes, which Star Wars fans will appreciate.

Conclusion

While this movie did not contribute much to the main Star Wars story, it's a well-done film with an amazing cast and excellent special effects.
