Review

In this new reimagining of the live-action Batman, Gotham City is plagued by a series of grisly murders of its key political figures. Reclusive billionaire Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) must uncover the complex criminal conspiracy as the Batman.

The mystery is pretty interesting and the film is much more a grisly detective movie than a conventional superhero film. Pattinson’s austere Wayne is good and the supporting cast, which includes Zoë Kravitz’s Selina, Colin Farrell's Penguin, and Andy Serkis’ Alfred are also solid. My favourite aspect of the film is the dark and gritty atmosphere of Gotham. The cinematography is very dark and there are many shots with interesting effects, such as those in the rain. The action sequences are not bad but nowhere near the scale and buildup of Nolan’s film trilogy. Overall the film is an interesting throwback to the older comics where Batman was primarily a vigilante detective. The film feels much more grounded than many other superhero films. The ending is a bit underwhelming, though.

Conclusion

A solid reimagining of a classic character.
