I've done some bad things in my life, Nicolai... Things I'm not proud of. I promised someone I love very much that I would never go back to being that person... But for you, I'll make an exception.

Review

Based on the 1980s TV series, Denzel Washington plays Robert McCall, a former intelligence officer living a quiet life in Boston. McCall befriends Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), a teenage prostitute who frequents the same late-night diner that McCall frequents. When Teri is badly beaten and brought to the ICU, McCall uses his old skills to hunt down those responsible.

This film reminds me of the films such as the Taken franchise, where a retired intelligence officer has to use skills from his past life to hunt down evil criminals. The formula is replicated so many times perhaps because it just works. It’s entertaining to watch the hero brutally murder criminals in defense of the defenseless. The plot is predictable and many characters, especially the antagonists such as Teddy (Marton Csokas), Masters (David Harbour), and Slavi (David Meunier) are all archetypal villains. Washington’s McCall is lethal and cold, and is a joy to watch.

Conclusion

Not the most original movie but very well-executed.
