The story reaches its climax as the various groups face off at the Lonely Mountain. This film had the most action from all three movies and it showcases in detail the actual battle which included impressive CGI and imaginative designs of the various armies. In the novel, Bilbo was knocked out for most of the battle so it was very interesting to see visually what happened when Bilbo was out. The story is lacking as the film is basically one long battle but the action sequences make up for it.

Martin Freeman’s heartfelt performance as Bilbo, and Richard Armitage’s portrayal of Thorin’s descent into madness were the highlights for me. Lee Pace’s ambiguous and conflicted Thranduil was also fun to watch. Both the sound and costume designs were on point. Finally, I liked how this movie set up the events for The Lord of the Rings.

Conclusion

A fantastic conclusion to the trilogy.
